"Your search cannot be completed because this site is not assigned to an indexer. Contact your administrator for more information."

If your site gives this error when search is accomplished , check this place;

Go to Central Administration -> Application Management -> Content Databases .
Choose your database and on the opening window and at the bottom combobox choose your indexing service.

  9. For 2010 it works the same way
    Go to Central Administration -> Application Management -> Manage Content Databases
    Choose your database and on the opening window and at the bottom combobox choose your indexing service named as "Search Server". Verify also that you have selected a "Preferred Server for Timer Jobs", as the indexing for search relies on a timer that runs every XX minutes. To change the frequency of the indexing service go to Central Administration -> System Settings -> Manage services on server -> SharePoint Search and setup "Indexing Schedule" with an appropiate interval. Search will not show results, unless the timer ran for at least one time (the first time).
